What is a digital piano?

An electronic piano, like its traditional counterpart, is made up of eighty-eight keys and is capable of playing any piece of music just like an acoustic piano. The main feature of any digital piano, however, is the fact that the tone it produces when a key is played has been pre-recorded simulating the sound of an acoustic piano. Digital pianos come with a wide variety of prerecorded tones (most digital pianos have more than 100 instruments to switch between) and have other useful features such as a headphone jack, external speakers, amplifier connection ports and computer and, on some models, adjustable haptic feedback. That said, a digital piano is the cheaper, more portable and versatile cousin of the acoustic piano. But there is also an even cheaper cousin that is further removed from what a true acoustic piano would be: the digital or electronic keyboard that we see in the next point.

What is a digital keyboard?

In short, a digital keyboard is an instrument that is designed for fun with music rather than for learning to play the piano, because it lacks the important details that make it similar to an acoustic piano such as: Number of keys, since an electronic keyboard will generally have 49 keys (4 octaves), 61 keys (5 octaves) or even 73 keys (6 octaves) unlike the digital piano which always has 88 keys (a little more than 7 octaves).

digital piano

The number of keys is usually the most common difference found in digital keyboards as they have fewer than eighty-eight keys. This is usually done to increase the portability of the instrument. The other fundamental difference that can lead to classifying an instrument as a keyboard and not a piano is the fact that the keys may not have tactile feedback. An acoustic piano has weighted keys, since the keys have a hammer that hits the strings and makes them vibrate, producing the desired note. In the case of a digital piano, this «hammer action» or «counterweight» effect must be simulated, so that the touch when playing the key is as similar as possible to that of an acoustic piano. In cheaper digital pianos, what is done is to use «sensitive keys» that is, despite not being weighted, they are capable of detecting the speed and pressure with which we press the key and emit a different volume for each type of keystroke. of the key. In digital keyboards, this hammer action does not exist because there are no weighted keys, nor are there usually even sensitive keys, so the keys on an electronic keyboard are soft, in most cases. It is very difficult to find keyboards with less than 88 keys with weighted or sensitive keys.

We’ve already covered some of the most important differences between a digital keyboard and a digital piano, but comparing and contrasting the two is something worth looking at in more detail. Despite all the features of a digital piano, one of the main goals of the instrument is to retain the feel and sound of an acoustic piano.

digital keyboard

The touch resistance, sound and capabilities of a good digital piano should certainly be comparable to those of an acoustic piano. In the case of digital keyboards, this is not necessarily the case. Keyboards are often made to be cheaper , more portable, and more focused on sound-producing ability than to perform the function of a high-quality instrument pretending to be an acoustic piano. That’s not to say that there aren’t great digital keyboards, and that they serve their purpose perfectly, but if you’re looking to buy an instrument to learn how to play an electronic piano, or if you’re already used to an acoustic piano and are looking forward to a Smooth transition to the advantages of this type of piano, the digital piano is by far the best option. Of course the price is another point to take into account, since a digital piano costs more than an electronic keyboard, but it depends on your objectives, one or the other will be a better option. An electronic keyboard can range between €150 and €400 for more complete models. For its part, we can buy digital pianos starting at €300, which was unthinkable a few years ago, so having a digital piano at home for the cost of a mid-high range keyboard is an excellent opportunity. Polyphony (how many notes can sound at once) is another very important point to take into account, since to study classical piano a minimum of 192 voices is recommended. Digital pianos generally have 256 voices of polyphony, although there are also lower ones with 128, 96, 64 or 48, which also influence the price of the instrument. There are also digital pianos with 384 voices of polyphony or even 512 in more advanced models. Home keyboards meanwhile will have 8, 16, 20, 24, 32 or 48 voices of polyphony as a rule.

Why choose an electronic piano over an acoustic one?

The advantages of a digital piano over an acoustic one are hard to overlook. For one thing, digital pianos can be much more portable and easier to fit into a small space.

acoustic piano or digital piano

Sure, there are electronic pianos as large as any acoustic piano, but there are also much smaller pianos. The fact that digital pianos are not forced to accommodate eighty-eight strings and hammers ensures that they can be made much smaller and lighter than is possible with an acoustic piano. The second advantage is the versatility and variety of features that a digital piano offers. If you are a person who enjoys all the sounds and timbres, then the digital piano is for you. Features such as a wide variety of sounds, the ability to connect to amplifiers and computers, external speakers, memory cards, headphone jacks and many others, depending on the instrument, make the digital piano capable of many more applications than a piano. acoustic. Lastly, digital pianos generally cost less, making them ideal for someone who is not yet dedicated enough to music to spend several thousand euros on an instrument. That said, these advantages have led many people, experienced musicians and beginners alike, to choose a digital piano over an acoustic one. So much so, in fact, that over the years, the digital piano has quickly become the more popular of the two.

Types of digital pianos and keyboards available

In addition to the electronic keyboard and electronic piano, there are several other important subclasses that need to be considered. Deciding which of these subclasses best suits your needs is the beginning of choosing your piano.

Upright digital piano

upright digital pianoThis instrument is the closest in design, function and appearance to a traditional acoustic piano. It has eighty-eight keys and includes a cabinet and some type of stand. Its look is what most likely comes to mind when you think of a piano, and it is the most popular digital piano design.

Digital Console Piano

digital piano consoleVery similar to the upright digital piano, the main distinguishing feature of the digital console piano is that it is smaller and may not have the classic shape. As for function, however, a console is just as capable of making good music as an upright piano, making it a great option for someone who lacks the space for a full-size piano.

stage piano

stage pianoThis one is pretty self explanatory. Stage pianos are capable of connecting to amplifiers, external speakers, and a variety of other electronic accessories that are geared toward a live performance. If you are putting on a show and want to turn it into a real show, a stage piano is the best option.

Great digital piano

grand digital stage pianoNo other piano is more beautiful than the digital grand piano . Likewise, no other type of piano plays like this one, and owning a concert grand piano is the dream of almost every serious pianist. Unfortunately, these magnificent instruments cost a small fortune, putting them out of the price range of most pianists.

digital keyboard

This instrument is the most portable and generally less expensive than others.

digital piano keyboard

While the fact that most keyboards have fewer than eighty-eight keys (ranging from the traditional sixty-one to eighty-eight depending on the model) may prevent you from playing some songs, the ability to carry the instrument under the arm and paying for it without having to take out a loan are certainly very attractive features of the digital keyboard.

Synthesizer

synthesizer

This instrument belongs to the keyboard class and is mainly used for music production. Synthesizers are capable of producing a wide variety of sounds and are made to connect to a computer. If you’re looking to mix and produce songs rather than play them, then a synthesizer is a great option.

MIDI keyboard controller

midi keyboard controllerLike a synthesizer, a keyboard controller is intended for music production. The main difference between the two is that a keyboard controller is not capable of producing sound unless it is connected to a computer, and typically has fewer sound options to choose from. However, MIDI controller keyboards are also less expensive than synthesizers.

What are the different sizes of digital pianos?

When we talk about sizes, we are referring to the number of keys available. There are 3 main sizes that you will see with digital keyboards; ones with 61 keys, 76 keys, or 88 keys. An 88-key digital piano will be more similar to a traditional acoustic piano, since the standard size is 88 keys. To understand the differences between the three before making a decision, you can read our digital piano size guide .

Which digital piano should you buy?

Which digital piano should you buy is a question that is best answered once we have answered other fundamental questions.

  • How much space do you have?
  • Do you just want to play the instrument or are you interested in music production?
  • How much are you willing to spend?

After you’ve considered these things, be sure to take a look at my digital piano buyer’s guide for more information on the decision, and look at reviews of some specific models to get a better sense of what they have to offer you. With a little consideration and research, purchasing a digital piano that perfectly suits your needs is not as difficult as it seems.
